Why PM parts destroy ordinary tools
Sintered components contain hard oxide inclusions from the powder process. Combined with porosity, the cut is effectively interrupted at a microscopic level, generating thermal cycling at the edge.
Carbide edges develop comb cracks and fail early; PCBN's hot hardness and thermal-chemical stability hold edge line through these conditions.
Grade selection principles
For sintered and hardened PM steels, a medium-to-high CBN content grade with a tough binder phase handles the micro-interruptions better than a low-content, high-abrasive-resistance grade.
Edge preparation matters more than in continuous cutting: a small chamfer or honed edge resists chipping at porosity boundaries.
Starting parameters
Start conservatively and tune in trial; sintered density and alloy additions vary significantly between PM suppliers.
| PM material condition | Cutting speed Vc (m/min) | Feed f (mm/rev) | Depth of cut ap (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sintered, as-sintered | 120–250 | 0.08–0.25 | 0.1–1.5 |
| Sinter-hardened (HRC 45–60) | 100–200 | 0.05–0.20 | 0.05–1.0 |
| Sintered cast iron equivalents | 150–300 | 0.10–0.30 | 0.1–2.0 |
